2mile Quickie

Poser August 9th, 2008

Ran a little over 2 miles yesterday, just to get out of the house for a little bit, and to start with getting my miles up. I figure in between my actual training runs, I’ll do these shorter runs just to keep active and and get used to running more miles per week, without having to increase my other runs.

The Conditions:
Distance: Roughly 2.4 miles
Pace: 8′ / mi
Weather: Warm, but not too bad. Ran about 7.30p, was darker out with a small breeze.
Route: The Cherry + 8th to R on Magnolia, down Mag to L on Right Sac, R on Citrus to 6th, L on 6th back to Cherry and stopped.

The Run:
Before: Another 8 hours of sleep, leisurely day. Spent most of it inside troubleshooting Nike+, and watching tv. Two soft taco lunch, with half a Regular Black Forest Ham sandwich from Togos. Drank two bottles of water in the three hours before run, last sip was ~ 1/2 hour before out the door. Warmup was 3×15sec wall squats, 10sec leg raises for each leg, 2×10 bicycle crunches, and 10 pushups. Was a little sore in arms from pushups the day before, as I hadnt done pushups in quite a while (weeks).

During: Leisurely jog to loosen up before run from drive way to Cherry + 6th. Once I hit 6th I started off, and half from Cherry to Mag I felt my left knee acting weird, nothing bad, but I could tell it was a little tight. Should have done my other stretches like I did the day before, but forgot to log. Once I hit 8th and Mag I quickened pace till 7th, and decided to do Fartlek type bursts. I would burst for a full block, then take two blocks to recover a little, running at race pace, or little slower. Did about 4 bursts total, which I think resulted in the post-run problem (noted below). Otherwise I felt good, a little tired since I was doing the run so late in the day, but it was better than doing it during extremely hot weather.

After: Once hitting 6th and Cherry I stopped, and walked back home. I felt left shins feeling a bit sore, so walked slower than usual. Once back in the apartment I could tell they were hurting, possibly splints. Definitely hurt once I got my shoes off, so I grabbed my ice pack and a Powerade, and iced left shins while drinking 1/3 bottle of ‘Ade. Once shins felt better I showered up and relaxed in front of TV. Possibly too much running, especially with the speed burst parts, but today no problems, pains or aches.

First Run

And we’re off!

Yesterday marked the first run with my Nike+ for my iPod. Overall, I think I like it, even after one use. I like how I can get info on how far I’ve gone, and total time run, and my pace as I’m running. So heres my run log:

The Conditions:
Distance: A tad under 4.5 miles
Pace: ~ 8.25′ / mi
Weather: HOT. Ran at rough 1.20pm, with temp near, if not at least 90.
Route: The 4 miler

The Run:
Before: Slept about 8 hours the night before, and was up at 1030ish, breakfast at 11 of egg burrito and milk. Drank a 16oz bottle of Dasani water, finished at least 40 mins before the run. Did my wall squats, 5 sets of 20 secs, with 1 set of 12 leg raises for each leg. Also did 40 pushups (2×20) and 1 good set of crunches.

During: I felt the heat pretty good. Second day back in Chico and not accustomed to the heat quite yet. Started Nike+ once I hit end of driveway, and jogged slow to warm up, and walk/stretch before actual run at 8th and Cherry. Didnt feel dehydrated, as I finished up as I had that water. I did stop at Plumas for a drink, and quick mid-run walk to catch my breath. Body felt good and Refreshed.

After: Stop once I hit 8th and Cherry, and walked home. A little winded from the run, and didnt push the last stretch of run for fear of the heat overtaking me. Once I inside apartment (went up stairs fine) I chugged down 3/4 of a 32oz Gatorade (what was left of the bottle) and sat on a stool to cool down. Once I felt cooled off, showered and ran a few errands. No soreness or pains, and went through the day just fine. Later that night I had a headache, and went to bed early around 10.30p.

Hi! I’m just testing the new Wordpress app on my iPhone. Looks like this might be a good way to keep up on the whole blogging thing.

Maybe.

Also, here’s the current background on my phone.

Vacation from my Vacation

Poser June 21st, 2008

Its Summer Vacation from school, and I am currently taking a break up in Chico. Last day of classes was May 22, so I took the following weekend off and traveled back to San Jose on the 27th. While I am glad to be done with classes, which towards the end of this past semester I was just ACHING to be finished and out of town, I miss Chico a lot.

Granted, venturing back to San Jose and my friend there and the cool job I have is cool, I’ve once again just right back to my lazy ways. I didn’t go for a run once while I was in San Jose, though I did do the Muddy Buddy race a few weekends ago. Which besides the day I had to ride moms bike to work, has been the only exercise I’ve gotten so far this summer. I guess that means I need to pony up a few bucks and get a 3 month gym membership, or face gaining weight, which wouldn’t be a bad thing, but I would get out of shape.

Additionally, there have been quite a few projects I need to actually do, such as website redesigns and learning Javascript, XML, PHP, AJAX, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Perl, and other web related stuff. I’ve been needing to redesign my resume for at least a week now, which should have been something I coulda done in 2, 3 days max. I haven’t gone to see any movies, save the Chronicles of Narnia. All I do is go to work, then come home, eat dinner, and fart around my laptop while watching tv. Not healthy or productive.

So this brings me to Chico, where in 4 days I’ve been here, I’ve done more dishes than in a day then I’ve done since going back to San Jose (which is good, its doing chores and being responsible), gone out to Rockband Night at Panamas, gone out to UBar with James and Mario just to go and hangout, played a ton of Nintendo (mostly Mario Kart Wii and Guitar hero), started the redesign of my resume, slept in a little, printed and started my financial aid appeal, did laundry, cleaned my room, hung out with friends, went on a 4 mile run, saw a new movie (Get Smart, and it was hilarious), and bought food and made my own lunches and dinner. Basically, I lived independently and on my own. I guess this means I really need to get out on my own, and really leave “the nest.” While its fun living at home, its not productive.

On the heels of leaving the nest, is the question: “Where do I leave to?” Well, I want to go to Seattle, cause I love it there. I also dislike the Bay Area right now, for its insanely overpriced style of living. Southern California (namely LA and anywhere near it) is probably too insane to live in, I think. Portland is an idea, that its “borrowed” from James, since he enjoyed it there and I trust his assessment of the town. And then there’s Chico, where I’ve started my independent path of self-discovery, or some other hoopla semi related. Chico has quite a lot to offer. Bidwell Park for one, which to me is just awesome, its like Chico’s own Central Park or Golden Gate Park. Well, kinda. Theres One Mile and Lower Bidwell which is closer to town, and Upper Bidwell which is awesome hiking and stuff. Though its got kind of a small job market, which I guess I’d have to reevaluate what I want to do, web development stuff or my Information Architecture, or Librarian stuff.

Meh, enough rambling. Its time for sleep. The whole point of this rant and brain dump is: Sam needs to get out of the house, and be on his own. Stupid life making me grow up.
