So you know I work for San Jose Public Library right (because it says so in the About Me page)? Well, we have these computers at work that are pretty old and slow, and now we’re getting new faster ones. New HP’s with more RAM to run our Java based software and bigger LCD monitors. But the best part is that they all come with Firefox installed! Yah, Firefox I said. I tried before to install Firefox on my personal desktop profile, but I didn’t have the right admin privileges, so I cried for about 2 minutes then went back to work. Now that all the computers are setup with Firefox, maybe I can swing a few co-workers to travel on over to the Firefox world.

So, not even a month ago I posted about how my webhosting company majorly upgraded my account – more webspace, transfer and database – well they did it again. Now I have double what I have before, for the same price at $10 a month. 1and1.com does indeed rock.

Just for everyones info, I think 1and1.com is the best web hosting company ever. Granted I have only used them, and have not had the chance to try any other web hosts, but my experiences with 1and1 have been wonderful. When I first signed up, I chose their $10 a month plan, that gave me 2gb of web space, about 10gb of traffic, 3 domain names, and a few other cool features (MySQL database, CGI script support [perl, pythin, php, ruby], and some free software in their Productivity Suite). Since signing up in April of 2004, I’ve had my bandwidth massively increased from just 10 gb to 500gb, my webspace bumped from 2gb to 10gb, and I went from just 1 database to use, now to 25! [100mb databases fyi]. All these features upgraded, at no additional cost to me. Thats right, I’m still paying $10 for all the upgrades that 1and1 and has done.
It seems that 1and1 has been doing very well for themselves, and have been able to upgrade all their packages, as well as adding a few new ones (notably the Beginner package). The few times I have had to email their tech support with a question, I got fast responses. Being a beginner myself with web development, I haven’t ever had problems requiring a call or live chat, so I cant really comment on those, but I’m sure they’re awesome too. They handled everything that needed handling when registering the 3 domains names included with my package, as well as renewing each domain when registration was expiring. And only once has my site not been accessbile, and even then it was only for about 2-3 hours max. So if youre in the market for a website, and wanting somewhere to host it, I highly recommend 1and1.com. Their simple control panel (for website adminstration) made my just starting out with a website for me extremely easy.

So, Opera just decided that they will give you their browser, free. So if you’re still using IE, I beg that you stop and get Mozilla Firefox or Opera’s browser. Regardless of what you hear, Firefox and Opera are the best browsers out there (for the PC), and much much much much much much more secure then IE. Plus they’re both Web Standards compliant, which makes your web browsing so much prettier.
