10k!
Poser July 16th, 2007
I ran a 10k this weekend, and I finished! Romano at work has been training for 10ks and marathons (both 1/2 and full), and I joined him in running a 10k last Sunday, the 15th of July. It was pretty damn fun. The run we did is part of the Jungle Run in Los Gatos. We woke up our boss, Sun Min, early to join us as part of our support team, and headed over to LG at 6.15am. Start time was at 7am, and both Ro and were ready to go for it. Some of Ro’s friends showed, and much chatting was going on before Ro and I lined up with the others and went to runnings.
It was my first actual race since training. I’ve only been training about month now, running on the treadmill at the gym, and I think I did pretty well. I originally started at trying to do my best 3 mile runs, and picked it up a little pushing to complete either an hour of running, or 4 miles, then 5, then 6. I managed to complete a whole 6.2 mile run on the treadmill the Wednesday before the race, and that gave me some confidence for the actual race. Ro has been training longer than I, so I made a plan to try and keep with him as well as I could, then just tone it down I needed. Up until about mile 2.5 I was with him, then backed off to keep myself going without tiring out too soon. At mile 3 I sadly had to stop for a few seconds to re-tie my left shoe, then I was back on the course and finished the race without any more stops, or loose shoelaces. AND, I finished the race in 1 hour, and 30 seconds. By the time I hit the finish line, I was ready to lie down, and/or throw up, but I did neither. I did far better than I thought I would, and I am totally excited about my next race. It was pretty awesome having completed a 6.2 mile race from start to finish, and I’m looking forward to do it again.
Up next is the Silicon Valley Marathon in November. I’ll be doing the Half Marathon with my girlfriend’s friend Kelly, who is also a runner. I’ll of course be up in Chico, but I’ll be running and training as much as I can, now that I got a great start from the Jungle run. My goal is to finish the 1/2 in less than 2 hours. I figure if I can do the 10k, 6.2 miles, in one hour with a month of training, and I can do twice the distance, 13.1 miles, in about the twice the time or less, with more time to train. I’m kind of way I’ll be able to complete the goal, but I think with enough mental training, and keeping myself fit and well rested, its doable. Until then, wish me luck in my training, and I hope to have more updates more often.
